Well, Mornington Crescent as we know it today is in fact a modern version of
a much older French game. In this, postmodernists moved from cafe to cafe
attempting to experience the nihilistic relativism of existence by
purchasing an item of alimentation but eating nothing, in establishments
whose purpose is to provide a place for people to eat[1]. The aim was to
manouevre one's opponent into consuming said item. Needless to say, being
French the rules were obscure and rather silly at times, but once one's
opponent was trapped one would follow his/her attempt to move again with a
cry of "Mais non! Ton croissant!" With the passage of time, the rise of the
British Grand Masters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the
introduction of a clear and logical system of rules, this metamorphosed into
the world phenomenon we know today.

[1]I intend to do this for a year and then nominate myself for the Turner
Prize, btw. I reckon it's a shoo-in.
